  3. today announced the PC2LAN/X.25 remote shell that provides PCs with
  4. cost-effective, asynchronous access to LANs by means of an X.25 network.

  6. A software-only remote shell, the PC2LAN/X.25 is targeted at remote PC
  7. users and traveling professionals. Through the asynchronous communications
  8. (COM) port of their PCs and a modem, the remote shell allows PC users to
  9. gain LAN access via an X.25 network. No additional hardware is needed, and
  10. the software remote shell requires just 8 Kbytes.

  12. "Recognizing the need for connectivity between a large number of remote
  13. asynchronous PCs and a central site LAN, we developed the PC2LAN/X.25
  14. remote shell and modified our LAN2LAN router to meet the need," said Larry
  15. Stephenson, president of Newport Systems Solutions. "Now up to 64 remote
  16. PCs running PC2LAN/X.25 can access the central site and all of its
  17. resources via a single LAN2LAN router. Additional routers may be used if
  18. the connectivity requirement is larger."

  20. Features and Requirements

  22. The PC2LAN/X.25 requires Newport Systems' LAN2LAN router with X.25 Access
  23. to be present at the central site. Using an efficient "packet interface,"
  24. the LAN2LAN router connects LANs together at speeds from 9.6 Kbps to 384
  25. Kbps. Each LAN2LAN router with X.25 Access accommodates a total of 64
  26. remote PCs or LANs.

  28. The LAN2LAN router with X.25 Access and the PC2LAN/X.25 work together to
  29. maximize and preserve the X.25 bandwidth. NetWare broadcast suppression
  30. and IPX overhead compression are two key features included for optimum use
  31. of available bandwidth.

  33. The PC2LAN/X.25 also includes an asynchronous X.25 calling utility with a
  34. script language for automatic call generation. The remote shell
  35. automatically connects the remote PC to an X.25 network PAD (Packet
  36. Assembler/Disassembler). Standard scripts (CompuServe and BT Tymnet) are
  37. included for first time users.

  39. Line speeds up to 38.4 Kbps are supported to allow use of V42bis or MNP7
  40. asynchronous data compression modems.

  42. To enhance performance of applications requiring both file access and
  43. remote execution, remote users may also employ a product that enslaves a
  44. local computer while remotely providing keyboard inputs and screen
  45. updates. Several products, such as Novell's NetWare Access Server v1.2,
  46. can greatly improve remote performance because file access is accomplished
  47. at LAN speeds.

  49. Benefits of X.25 Networks

  51. The major benefit of X.25 networks is that they connect multiple remote
  52. locations through one physical port. With numerous remote PC users, an
  53. X.25 network saves communications costs by eliminating the need for a
  54. separate communications line and for supporting host hardware for each
  55. connecting PC.

  57. Another important benefit of X.25 networks is the nondistance sensitive
  58. method of charging. Remote PC users make local calls to the X.25 network
  59. instead of long distance calls to the central site. Additional charges are
  60. usually based on packets or characters transmitted and the call's
  61. duration, but not on the distance between parties.

  63. "With remote computing becoming a larger and continually growing segment of
  64. the market, the PC2LAN/X.25 can reduce the cost for both central site
  65. managers and remote users by allowing them to use X.25 networks," added
  66. Stephenson. "This software remote shell will help expand the use of remote
  67. computing on NetWare LANs at a very low cost."

  69. The single user price for the PC2LAN/X.25 is $149, and the product is
  70. available now through Newport Systems' resellers and distributors.
  71. Multiple user licenses are available. Prices for the LAN2LAN router with
  72. X.25 Access begin at $2,695.
